Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio 2013
|Region||Italy, Tuscany, Chianti Classico|
|Brand||Castello di Monsanto|
The beautiful 2013 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is drinking very nicely at the moment. This cool vintage wine opens to a darkly saturated appearance with pretty tones of dark berry, cassis, tar, smoke and crushed river stone. Slightly evolved aromas of licorice and road paving add a whole new level of dimension and complexity. The wine is based on 95% Sangiovese with 5% Colorino, aged in tonneaux.
Savory notes of loam, wild thyme, juniper, iron and blood are tinged with cherry and currant fruit in this sinewy red. Sweet fruit mingles with the dusty tannins on the finish. The best of three bottles tasted. Best from 2020 through 2029.
Moist underbrush, toasted nut, raw oak, dark spice and prune aromas follow through to the assertive palate along with dried cherry, espresso and star anise. A note of powdered sage marks the close. It has firm acidity and austere, close-grained tannins that clench the finish.
