Dona Maria Amantis Reserva Red 2014
Wine AdvocateThe 2014 Reserva Amantis is a roughly equal blend of Syrah, Touriga Nacional, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 12 months in 30% new oak (mostly French, the rest American). It comes in at 14% alcohol. Because this was so tannic, the winery held it back an extra year and released the 2015 first. This is lovely now. The tannins have moderated-indeed, they have mostly dropped off. The balance is beautiful and the sappy fruit seems concentrated and ripe. It is very elegant too. This is a fine achievement at this level in this tricky vintage. I'm not sure it's better than the 2015-granting that they are not both here-but it seems to be its equal. Julio Bastos, for the record, likes this more and thinks it will age better. We'll see. Most won't care-it will be hard to resist this today.
Wine EnthusiastThis is a mature wine, showing spice and undergrowth aromas. The red fruit flavors have now softened into the tannins to give a wine with secondary flavors and touches of wood, plus a flourish of acidity at the end.
